GUIDE / FINANCE
Our money. Which priorities?
A budget is a set of choices about the city we live in. Start with one service or project you care about.
Choose a question you can follow.
Maybe you want to understand a service, a proposed project or a change in spending. Record the budget year and document version before you compare figures.
Look beyond the headline total.
- Find the service or project in the budget documents.
- Check what the amount includes and the period it covers.
- Read the explanation and follow the Budget Committee discussion.
- Keep proposed amounts separate from approved decisions. Share the document title and page with any number you use.
Ask what the choice delivers.
What is the service meant to do? What alternatives were discussed? How will residents see the result? Use the original documents to keep the conversation specific.
