Ridgeway Plaza: support the businesses, address the disruption
Residents can value a cultural gathering place and still want safer crossings, less litter and quieter nights.

Why people care about this place
The Local’s September reporting describes Ridgeway Plaza as a valued food and meeting destination for South Asian and Middle Eastern communities. It also interviews people frustrated by litter, reckless driving and noise. Those experiences can coexist. Its reporting cautions against treating community gathering itself as equivalent to unlawful behaviour.

What has already been agreed
In April, the City and the plaza’s condominium corporations announced a security framework. Owners would fund cameras, speed bumps, gates and additional security staffing, while the City increased parking enforcement and set up quarterly monitoring. Those are specific measures to assess; they are not a guarantee that every concern has disappeared.

The election choices are local too
The Local reports Ward 8 incumbent Matt Mahoney prioritizing safety enforcement, while challenger Rahul Mehta proposes better transit and public gathering space. Fellow Ward 8 candidate Viktoria Manzar’s platform supports Ridgeway alongside coordinated parking, cleanliness and enforcement. These are councillor positions; they should not be mistaken for mayoral platforms or adopted new projects.

Questions that can lead to workable changes
Ask what the agreement has achieved, who pays for ongoing management and what remains unsafe for visitors and neighbours. Could better pedestrian access, gathering space or transport reduce conflict? Ask business owners and nearby households the same questions, and judge specific behaviour and design problems without blaming an entire cultural community.
