Protect local jobs—and make opening a business easier
Tariff relief, faster permits and new investment are election proposals. Council has also ordered a review of business supports.

What Council is considering now
On September 16, Council directed staff to explore support for tariff-affected businesses, including tax-payment relief, development tools, procurement and economic-development measures. The City says recommendations will return to Council. This is a review of possible assistance, not confirmation that every employer can already claim a new tax deferral or grant.

What the campaigns propose
Alvin Tedjo proposes a small-business concierge, a 100-day guarantee for qualifying permits and a youth employment partnership. Bonnie Crombie proposes targeted tariff-related deferrals and faster payment to qualifying suppliers. Dipika Damerla proposes an express approval route for affected manufacturers and a health-innovation hub. Eligibility, budgets and delivery dates still need implementation decisions.

The wider community priority
The City’s refreshed Imagine Mississauga plan links economic prosperity with affordability, mobility and public trust. It was informed by more than 19,000 points of public input. That broad engagement supports discussing these priorities together, but does not establish that residents endorse any candidate’s particular business incentive or development proposal.

A useful test for business promises
Ask whether the plan helps an existing employer keep staff, a neighbourhood shop obtain permission, or a young person secure paid work. Request qualification rules, public timelines and outcome reporting. Also ask how benefits would be checked and how relief would be funded. A deferral changes payment timing; it should not be confused with eliminating the underlying obligation.
